Hi and welcome!
I’m so glad you’re here!
This is my virtual space where I will inspire and teach you how to create a functional, eco friendly and beautiful home.
– Who am I?
My name is Christina Påhlman.
I’m from Sweden originally, but I’m currently living in Russia. This is the fourth country I’ve lived in so far (I’ve also lived in Canada and Italy) …so I guess you can call me a global citizen.
I’m also mother to a wonderful (that goes without saying 🙂 being biased just a tiny bit…) daughter who’s full of energy and with a strong mind of her own.
I like life at home… well, to tell the truth, I love it!
– What is it that I love about Home?
I’m a person who likes to come home. It’s my base. There’s something special about that… my place where I can be 110% me! Totally relax and slip in to the stretchy pants…and feel free.
My home gives me energy and it’s a place where I can recharge. I look at Home as a space that lives with you, follows you and your needs depending on where you are in life. It’s never finished… it’s a work-in-progress- you can always adapt and change it as you change.
– Have I always had this connection to homes?
My love for creating a beautiful and enjoyable home started when I was really young. I was always building houses, first with chairs and sheets, and then with Legos. The older I got, the more elaborate my homes got. I never needed a Barbie house; instead my wardrobe was a great place for building her a home (with several floors I might add)!
My favourite part of creating homes was the “remodelling” part. I always had the ability to start over anytime I wanted.
I still remember clearly when it was time for me to transform my room from a little girl room to one suitable for a teenager. My parents encouraged me to be a part of the process, not only choosing colors but also deciding what new furniture to get as well. I loved it!
And the story continues…When I had started earning my own money from my first job, still in high school, guess what my first purchase was? My very own bed linens with lots of flowers on them! 🙂 (Yep, we all have our priorities…)
– How did I end up working in the home furnishing business?
For 2 years after high school, I studied textile design – both designing clothes and fabric. As much as I loved making my own clothes, what I really fell in love with was the making of the actual fabric and especially textiles for interior use. (When I’m in a fabric store I’m the girl just standing there touching and feeling the fabric. Just filling my senses with the textures and the colors and the combination of it all!)
Next step was University for History of Art and Architecture. No surprise the buildings and the interiors showed up to be my strength. I had discovered a new passion.
My love of Architecture and textile took me to Florence, Italy… to study interior design. Two years later I got the job of my dreams… I was working as an Interior Designer at one of the world’s largest and most successful home furnishing companies….IKEA!
That was over 15 years ago!
– What do I like about my job?
When working with clients I ask them about their dreams and aspirations for their home. And it very often occurs to me how similar we are. We pretty much share the same needs in general, regardless where we live. What differs is when we go deeper and discover our habits and interests, and then it all boils down to the solutions and style we want to choose. I love to see homes evolve based on the people who live there. They are as unique as the people who live in them.
– Can I give an example?
I guess my own is as good as anyone else’s…
After I became a mother my focus on how home furnishings should work shifted for me. Functionality became even more important. If you’re a parent you know what I’m talking about. Right? As a working mother I got stressed and overwhelmed when coming home to a place that didn’t seem to function in a good way.
There were always piles of stuff, and toys moving around never really finding a home. I battled these expanding piles by creating temporary solutions that just moved them from one place to the next in our house.
Never really dealing with them, just hiding them. This drove me crazy!
It was time for a change…because our living situation had changed.
Smart, time-saving solutions were at the top of my list, but (of course!) it had to still match my desire for a beautiful and eye-catching space. 🙂
Moving eight times over the past 20 years has taught me that it’s much easier to create a functional home than you might think…. I’ve really gotten to know myself and I’ve learned the difference between what I need to have and what is nice to have and how to balance these while create a home that is functioning for me.
You don’t need to build a new home. What’s important is what you do with the existing space that you have. And what fuels my passion is figuring out great things to do with existing spaces.
– Why do I have a special interest in eco-friendly home furnishing?
Having lived in different countries and cultures I’ve seen the difference in how the environment is treated, and the difference in knowledge around being eco-friendly and sustainable… but we all have one thing in common and that is our planet. I believe the majority of us want to do the right thing but we don’t always know where to start. And sometimes we think it’s too much of an effort to even start.
But my major turning point was, and is, my daughter:
Watching my daughter grow up has strengthened my desire for a more eco friendly and sustainable lifestyle.
I want to be able to look into her eyes and show her that what we do can make a difference, that we all matter and our choices have an impact. That we can make eco-friendly choices without it being so complicated…. and most importantly, that we have to stand up for what we believe in.
– Why have I started Eco Deco Home?
Often we get “inspired” but the inspiration remains only a dream instead of becoming a reality, our own reality.
I can help you transform your dream into your reality by sharing all of my 15+ years of experience in the home furnishing industry.
Because eco-friendly design is my passion, I’ll share great resources with you on how to not only create a beautiful and functional space, but also how to do so in an eco-conscious way!
Speaking of eco-friendly… an eco-friendly and sustainable home can be as bright and colorful as you want to have it! It’s not all green and brown! (Good news, huh?!??)
I will show you that being eco-conscious does not have to be complicated and it does not mean that you have to radically alter your lifestyle.
Believe me…you don’t have to move out to the countryside and become some self-sufficient farmer. I’m a city girl and I love it! But I’ve found simple ways to incorporate eco-friendly products into my home, and I’ve developed eco-friendly habits and ways of thinking into my life.
What it all boils down to, at the end of the day…I believe…is that you just want to come home to a home that works for you…
Meaning… things have their place and it’s easy to keep tidy.
Meaning… it’s easy to move around in.
Meaning… you like what you see, it makes you feel good, and you can relax and enjoy your time at home – no matter how crazy your life may be.
…and best of all, if your choices in home furnishings impact other people outside of your home by creating a healthier and sustainable environment for future generations…
It’s Win / Win / Win if you ask me!
